Why Korczak?

Janusz Korczak, the pen name of Henryk Goldszmit (July 22, 1878/79 – August 5, 1942), was a Polish-Jewish educator, children's author, and pediatrician known as Stary Doktor ("Old Doctor"). After spending years working as the co-director of a Jewish orphanage in Warsaw, he had refused sanctuary and stayed with his orphans when the entire population of the institution was sent from the Ghetto to the Treblinka extermination camp, during the Warsaw’s Grossaktion in August 1942.

We need to combine efforts, resources, ideas, people for doing something really valuable in our world.
To combine we need a common framework, common ground.
Korczak (his personality, his ideas, his practice) can serve as our common ground for uniting.

Korczak is «multicultural» and at the same time he is very specific in formulating his national, cultural roots and bases:
a Jew by birth, he devoted his whole life to his beloved Poland,
part of the time he lived in Russia, he is respected throughout the world.

On the one hand, Korczak was one of the whole “galaxy”, of the movement of the brilliant teachers of the first half of the 20th century who in fact at one time thought “in unison” and did common things (in different countries, in different circumstances, in different ways) - they helped a child to be a human today.

This gives us grounds (if I correlate myself with Korczak’s ideas) to feel in the context of global trends in education of a child, and to not be alone in my search.

On the other hand, Korczak - a unique teacher, whose experience is very modern, and is now in demand.

Korczak is probably the first who so clearly formulated the idea of children’s rights, rights of a child for respect - important for all of us.

Korczak not only formulated the idea, but he also brilliantly showed with his own practice how it can be implemented in the work with children; he created the teaching tools quite relevant today.

About the annual conference on alternative education

About the annual conference on alternative education

1997 - 2019

Why are we holding our conference?

We regard our conference as a platform for discussing emerging educational prospects, comprehending the experience of various existing alternative practices, and the possibility of implementing various social initiatives. We hope that this conference is a place of friendly and mutually interested meeting of practitioners and researchers.

We are convinced that alternative education is the environment where answers to many urgent questions of training and upbringing of the younger generation ripen, where possible promising lines of educational development arise.
Therefore, it is so important to comprehend the available alternatives and we need the support of social initiatives that embody them.

In many ways, to support such initiatives, we consider it important to organize our conference as a public space for dialogue on education.

It is important for us to present to each other and the community the existing practices and to hear a friendly and meaningful assessment. It is important for us to get not only moral support in our activities, but also partners for collaboration. It is important for us, together with researchers, to relate our experiences and experiments with the existing tradition, to hear new ideas and think about previously unrecognized problems, to see new horizons of development.

And, of course, it is important to understand that you are not alone, that there are still people who are looking in the same direction as you. There are people from whom you can learn, from whom you can find support, with whom you can think about common actions. We hope that there is an opportunity, no matter how difficult it may be, to gradually build a community that can oppose general simplification - the constructive steps of developing complexity, cultivating the human in specific children and adults, and diversity in society as a whole.

Interactive Museum "World of Mathematics"

The objective of the " World of Mathematics" project is the promotion and development of mathematical education in the logic of "mathematics for all."

Acquaintance with mathematics in this vein implies that for its development it is important to help students and visitors to live the drama of the ideas underlying this science, and not only to remember the laws and facts already born by other people. It is important to experience the surprise of meeting with science and other positive feelings and emotions that show that mathematics is interesting and fascinating.

“Mathematics for all” is, first of all, an understanding of the foundations available to everyone, and only then a deepening in operational skills.

Often this understanding is achieved, including through practical application, showing that mathematics is not only abstract knowledge, but also a language that allows one to describe many phenomena of the surrounding life; science, the development of which helps change the world.

To 140th anniversary of the birth of JANUSZ KORCZAK and the completion of the contest for the translation of artistic texts for bilingual children "CULTURAL BRIDGE RUSSIAN-ENGLISH" in the USA was held in New York!

What links these events - the 140th anniversary of Janusz Korczak and the completion of the “Cultural Bridge” contest?

Janusz Korczak, a Jew by birth, lived and worked in pre-war Poland, led two Orphanages - Polish and Jewish, wrote his books and articles in several languages - and thus proved to be a bridge between two cultures, two peoples.

He believed that children - the same people as adults, only with a slightly smaller experience of life, and they have the same rights, and can participate equally with adults in solving vital life issues.

He not only dreamed about a more just organization of the world, but he organized just so the life of his orphanages. And he wrote about it in his wonderful books, and in particular in the famous book about “King Matt the First”.

The contest “Cultural Bridge” invited the children to try themselves in the role of such responsible intermediaries between the two worlds - Russian-speaking and English-speaking cultures - and gain experience in translating professional artistic texts. And thus, to feel the advantages and the responsibility that fate (and parents :-)) has given them - together with the opportunity to freely speak, read, write, and think in two languages.

During the contest, children speaking two languages (Russian and English) and living in the USA translated stories of Russian-speaking writers from Russian into English. For many of them it was the first experience of literary translation. Works of young participants were read and analyzed by jury members - professional writers and translators.

On the meeting held on April 21, 2018 in the “School-Plus in Manhattan” (New York) more than 40 young translators and their favorite adults took part (https://www.facebook.com/events/441474676307328/)

We got acquainted with the books of Janusz Korczak and together with their heroes allowed themselves to dream a little. We hope that children and adults will take a great interest in the ideas and heroes of the great dreamer and will read his books about King Matt, Kaytek the Wizard, a small Jack-businessman.

Under the guidance of Olga Bukhina, a professional translator, one of the jury members of the “Cultural Bridge” contest, we trained our translational skills, working with texts in Russian and English.

We congratulated the winners of the “Cultural Bridge: Russian-English” Contest in the USA (those who were able to attend the Salon on that day) and handed them diplomas and wonderful books sent to us by the partner publishers of the Contest.

All participants of the Book Salon received bookmarks as a gift with a reminder of the books of Janusz Korczak, which are worth reading to all the young (and not necessarily young) dreamers.

Thanks to everyone who was with us today!
